Smock Makers

Karim Mahama

The town of Daboya in Upper East Region is synonymous with indigo dyeing in Ghana. Almost all of the town’s inhabitants are involved in the trade. The family of Mr. Karim Mahama has been trading in Wa for almost thirty years. Karim brings woven, indigo-dyed strips from his hometown, Daboya, to smock makers in Wa. There, the four-inch strips are sewn together to make smocks, some of which Karim designs. Smocks are intended both for ceremonial and everyday use. Karim works in the Daboya tradition of natural dyeing and smock-making. In Wa, he is one of the few weavers with male apprentices.
